Manahan's grocery

H. A. Manahan & Sons Ltd. opened in Ipswich, opposite the Queensland Times on the corner of Brisbane and Ellenborough Streets, in 1930.

At this time the company, established in about 1900, was mooted to be the biggest grocers in Queensland with 20 branches located in Brisbane, Toowoomba and Ipswich. By 1937 Manahan's had about 30 shops statewide and Murwillumbah. 

Prior to Manahan's occupying the site in the Bostock & Sons building, it was Mr T. Humphrey's tobacco shop. Alf Scott had a hairdressing salon at the rear of Humphrey's before it became Manahan's. 

It is unknown when Manahan's grocery closed in Ipswich although it was still in existence in 1959.

Manahan's also had 11 stores in northern New South Wales (each with liquor licences): Armadale, Cessnock, Coffs Harbour, Glen Innes, Grafton, Lismore, Maitland, Murwillumbah, Newcastle, Tamworth, and Tenterfield.
