DescriptionSeries of images of the construction work. The pool was opened in December1961,near corner of Chermside and Griffith Roads and officially named the Jim Gardiner Swimming Centre in 1981. Jim Gardiner, was a swimming coach in Ipswich for many years, having coached more than 25,000 local children and adults. He was named Ipswich Citizen of the Year in 1974 and received the British Empire Medal in 1979 (Information from Jim Gardiner's obituary in The Queensland Times, August 1990). The pool was demolished in 2000 and a Commemorative Gateway was opened in 2003.
