Description
DescriptionImages of houses and buildings between No 97 and 111. Ipswich Baptist Church was formed in 1859, and the brick chapel was opened at the top of Brisbane Street, in 1877. The Baptist Church manse was at No 98, Limestone Street behind the original Baptist Church that faced Brisbane Street. It is now the site of a McDonald's Restaurant (2013). At No 97, Villa Maria, was originally 'Beaumont', a gracious colonial residence, built on this site around 1863 by William Hancock for the prosperous merchant, G.H. Wilson. After his death, in 1899, Dr John Flynn lived there with his family until the early 1920's. He renamed the house 'Mariemont'. After the Flynns, the house was in turn a boarding house, residence and flats. In the early 1950's the Sisters of the Order of Perpetual Adoration established a home for the elderly. Changed the name again to "Villa Maria" Problems with fire regulations forced the Sisters to demolish the residence in the early 1970's, and it has been replaced with this brick building. At one time, NO 111 was owned by James Thomas Finimore, a mayor of Ipswich
