Central Hotel

Originally known as the Volunteers' Arms dating from 1864, in 1903 the name was changed to the Central Hotel with H. O. Vincent as licensee.

Located in Nicholas Street, in the 1960s the hotel was next to Barry & Roberts and two doors from Edwards & Lamb.

William Vowles, an early resident of Ipswich, from 1842 to his death in1894, lived on the site where the Central Hotel would stand in later years. Vowles was a pioneer timber getter who was the first man to be married in Ipswich. He also built the first house in Ipswich and erected the first police buildings in the town. 

Licensees of the Central Hotel had often held the license for other hotels in Ipswich: W. Haskings was a former licensee of the Racehorse Hotel in Bundamba. Mrs Vincent was the daughter of John White a licensee of the Prince Alfred Hotel in Booval.

Central Hotel was still in existence until at least the late 1960s.
