DescriptionThe majority of the land on which Ozanam House stands was purchased by James Stirling in November 1879. It transferred to William Berry in 1884 and then to Richard Davies Graham in 1885. The date of construction of the building is most likely ca.1886, as R.D. Graham took out two mortgages on the property in June 1886. It is likely that Ozanam House was designed by R.D. Graham who practiced as an architect, civil engineer, licensed surveyor, agent and auctioneer with his firm R.D. Graham and Son from 1883-1887. There were another 4 owners before the Roderick Street frontage of the property was purchased in 1960 by the Metropolitan Central Council of Brisbane of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, local governments and the Main Roads Department played a significant role in the provision of unemployment relief work. The Intermittent Relief Work Scheme started in Ipswich on 5 May 1931 and continued until 1939. Men were employed to construct roads, footpaths, kerbs and beautification of the City.
