Shewan Pharmacy

Shewan pharmacy was located at 111 Brisbane Street next to the Bank of New South Wales, which was on the corner of Brisbane and Bell Streets. In the 1950s, P. Naylor - Hairdresser was in the shop on the other side and Ipswich Photographic Centre was located above Shewan's. 

Shewan Pharmacy dates from 1935 when Roy Stanley Shewan went into business in Ipswich for himself. He had served his apprenticeship in the trade at Ipswich Friendly Society Dispensary (probably UFS Dispensary) starting in 1912. He was Assistant Manager at F. C. Allen's City Pharmacy in 1919,  and was manager of Minnis's Pharmacy for 9 years during the 1920s. 

Roy Shewan was a compounding and dispensing chemist. The shop also sold toiletries, cosmetics, cameras & photographic film, patent medicines, perfume, health foods, salines, surgical dressings and medicinal aides. 

Following Roy's death in 1943, managers carried on the business until Keith A. Shewan took over at the end of 1945. This may have been Roy's son Keith. The Shewan family had a number of pharmacists within their ranks.

Shewan Pharmacy was a fixture in Brisbane Street for decades. 

K. A. Shewan  opened Silkstone Pharmacy, at 90 Blackstone Road in December1953.
