Description

DescriptionThe Historical Marker for the Chestnuts and Mona Lodge was installed on 7 august 2007.

Plaque text:
The Chestnuts was built in 1885 for Mr Thomas Brew Lyons as a private residence for sale or rent. Previously in 1859 Mr Lyons had constructed Mona Lodge, a ‘semi detached’ brick residence on the lower portion of the land, now 88 Nicholas Street which he also built for rental purposes. In January 1873 Mona Lodge was rented by Mrs. Mary Darnley Morrison, to be her private school premises. In November 1855 following the completion of the Chestnuts, Mrs. Morrison purchased both houses. The following year she included the Chestnuts in advertisements for her school and with Mona Lodge, catered for boarders. In 1901 with pressure from the mortgagees Mrs. Morrison subdivided the block of land with a house on each. Mona Lodge was sold to pay off debts. Over the next quarter of a century Mrs. Morrison and her daughter Mary continued to live in the Chestnuts. Following her death on 21 April 1928 the house passed to Mary who continued to live here until 1936 when she sold the house to Mr. S. Hancock. Mr. & Mrs. McLucas purchased the Chestnuts in 1966 and sold it in 1967 to Mr. A. Clarke & Miss E. Jennings. Following their marriage they resided in the house until 1993 when the Chestnuts was sold to Allen & Linda Cooper.
