Misses J. and L. Raymond - Milliners

On Friday 14 June 1912 the Misses Raymond opened a new millinery and fancy goods business in Brisbane Street Ipswich, opposite the Qld Times building.

Jane Emily Raymond had been head of the millinery department at T.C.Beirne's.

Lily Beatrice Raymond was to be responsible for the fancy goods side of the business.

In 1914 the business moved into the newly constructed Greenham building just a few doors west of their original shop on Brisbane Street. The facade of this building still exists at 191 Brisbane Street with 1913 seen on the parapet. The building was divided into three shops with Miss E. Ryan - Fruiterer occupying one of the other stores. By 1918 W. Pratt - Jeweller occupied the third shop. On the eastern side of the Raymonds in 1918 was T. H. Palmer's Wine Refreshment Rooms. 

This millinery business kept women of Ipswich on trend, stocking fashionable headwear and fancy goods for decades.

Business was such that between 1912 and Novmeber 1926 the Misses Raymond enlarged their premises, and/or remodeled three times. The Misses Raymond's millinery establishment served Ipswich for at least 34 years. 

Jane died in July 1946 and the shop continued to trade, however, advertising for the enterprise peters out around this time. Lily died in January 1948 and it is not known whether the business was a going concern at this point, or beyond.
