DescriptionThe Dead Man’s Penny is a commemorative bronze medallion which was presented to the next-of-kin of men and women who died during World War I. The deceased soldier's name is on the right with no rank provided to show equality in sacrifice. Although Arthur's mother, Mrs Rebecca Elliott, was listed as his next-of-kin on his enlistment form, the medallion had to be sent to his father according to procedure. Arthur’s father received the medallion in October 1922. Arthur Elliott enlisted 20 May 1916. He died of wounds in hospital at Etaples, France, in October 1917. He is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery.
