Description
DescriptionFull text interview with Joyce Delaney on her life as an entertainer in Ipswich and surrounds. Interview conducted by Melanie Rush. At nine the young Joy joined the choir at St Mary's. Her first solo performance was on 4IP radio station in 1946. In her late teens she started singing for a dance band, Col Naylor's The Coleagians, at the Town Hall on Friday and Saturday nights, across the road from where she was working at Woolworths. From there, she sang in Brisbane at the Theatre Royal with George Wallace's vaudeville show. Entertaining troops at the Amberley RAAF Base, with Russ Buchann's band on a Tuesday night, she met George, her future husband. Together, they would be responsible for setting up many of the Country Music groups in Ipswich. Performing as the Jardels, they would sing at venues across South East Queensland, charity events and on television, including one memorable recording where the Jardels followed three young brothers on their first television appearance as the Bee Gees. At the time of the interview (2015), Joy was still entertaining at local nursing homes around Ipswich, but has since passed away.
