He wasn't allowed into the army at first because of his eyesight. I remember him talking about changing his age to get in but that isn't borne out by the written record.
He visited Somerset relatives on leave. They asked him if he could scythe and so he helped get the harvest in. At the end of the day they gave him a big glass of cider. He drank it down and said "That was lovely! Could I have another?" They looked at him and someone said "Big strong lad. He should be alright." So he had another and then couldn't stand up. He said it went straight to his legs.
