Description2nd Lt. Jack W. Oliver, a pilot with the United States 408th Bombardment Squadron, was a passenger on a B-26 Marauder aircraft, of the 408th Squadron, 22nd Bombardment Group, when it crashed on take-off from Reid River Airfield (near Townsville) on 15th May 1942. Eight men died. Originally buried in the Townsville Cemetery, Oliver, along with other American servicemen from Townsville and other cemeteries throughout Queensland, were reinterred at the USAF Military Cemetery in Ipswich throughout 1945. Oliver was reburied on the 5th of August 1945. In 1947, the bodies of 1395 servicemen and 8 servicewomen were exhumed and repatriated to cemeteries in America. The site of the USAF Military Cemetery, now known as Manson Park in tribute to Mrs Manson, who tended the graves during the war, remains a memorial garden to the US Servicemen and women who were stationed in Australia during the Second World War.
