Description
DescriptionA sub-committee of the Ipswich Municipal Council was formed in August 1860 to consider the collecting of subscriptions to purchase a 'powerful fire engine', which would be manned by volunteers from the Ipswich Volunteer Rifle Company. It would be years before an engine was provided, with the brigade having to rely on water carts and buckets. George Cuthbert was appointed as the first superintendent of the Ipswich Fire Brigade. The fire brigade was active by July 1865, when a fire destroyed the old timber premises of Cribb & Foote in Bell Street. After years of using water carts, buckets, tricycle 'fire reel', manual fire reel, and horse drawn vehicle, the brigade was equipped with a motor fire vehicle in 1908 and a dedicated fire station was built in Brisbane Street in 1918-1920. The building, beside the Baptist Church, was demolished in 1967, with a new fire station built in Limestone Street. In 2013, this station closed and the fire brigade moved to new premises at Ripley.
