Description
DescriptionHome designed by architect Karl Langer. Interior of John McQueen’s residence, Raceview. Note the indoor garden bed. John McQueen’s grandfather, William, established the Box Flat Mine in 1897, possibly naming it after the box trees found on the site. In the wake of the Box Flat disaster, 30 July, 1972, Robert McQueen, William’s son, and John’s father, sold the mine within a few years, and John, whose only brother had died during the Second World War, would inherit the family fortune. At the age of 24 he built this modernist design house and started to follow a passion for big game hunting. Over the years his collection of animals grew to include a black bear, polar bear, a grizzly bear, lions, tigers, deer, foxes, eagles, elephants, monkeys, and wallabies, all on display in this house. After his death in 2001, at the age of 62, his collection of big game trophies was auctioned off, attracting hundreds of curious visitors and bidders.
