Penney's opened in Nicholas Street on the 1st December, 1938. Penney's would later evolve into Coles. Coles remained at this site even after it became Ipswich Mall (in 1987).

Coles and Woolworths were always viewed as rivals for the same customers, selling similar goods, providing similar retail experiences.

Coles opened on the block bounded by Limestone, Gordon and Brisbane Streets in 1979. Construction of the supermarket began here August 1978. Immediately prior to this the block had been used for parking.

The first Coles supermarket in this location was demolished after the January 2011 flood. A new building was opened on the site 6 February 2013.
