Waltons (Ipswich store)

Waltons was a department store founded by John Walton (1904–1998).

Waltons Ltd. was started in 1951 by Sir John Robert Walton and sold to Alan Bond in 1981, then sold on in 1987 to the Cooke family.  

In Ipswich, Waltons occupied the Beirne building, designed by Robin Dods, at the corner of Nicholas and Union Streets. This building was originally built by T.C. Beirne & Co. and opened in 1902. Waltons purchased it in 1974 after their store in East Street was flooded. 

The last trading day for Waltons in Ipswich was 15 April 1987. The building was then demolished 24-26 April 1987 to make way for the Ipswich Mall and revitalisation of the CBD.  After this redevelopment Lowes Menswear retail chain store occupied the corner location.  

Opening in June 2021 at 1 Nicholas Street the Ipswich City Council administration building now stands on this property.
