Colthup Furniture Store

James Barnett Colthup was originally an ironmonger who then owned a furniture and household goods business in Nicholas Street, Ipswich.  J.B.Colthup's store already existed by 1902. It sold household items from cutlery to mirrored sideboards and bedsteads.

In 1906 the store moved to new premises adjoining the original site on Nicholas Street. It was 2 storeys.

At this time the business is referred to as the People's Furnishing Mart, The People's Furniture Warehouse or The People's House Furnisher. By 1954 it was simply known as Colthup & Co. 

The Colthups became a well-known Ipswich business family. 

The building, along with others in Nicholas Street, was demolished as part of the revitalisation of the Ipswich CBD in the mid to late 1980s. 

James Colthup purchased 109 Limestone Street, Ipswich. The family lived there until 1918. This house is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

in 1918 a house at 39 Thorn Street was bought by the Colthup family and named ‘Latrobe’.  The home was acquired by the Baptist Church in 1958 and became Colthup home for aged people. It is now called Carinity Colthup Manor.

Colthup Chambers at the top of town area on Brisbane Street, (just past Ellenborough Street corner) was built by J. B. Colthup between 1914 and early 1916.
