Mathers

William Mathers of Mathers Shoes worked for T. C. Beirnes in Ipswich following his World War I service, and before opening his own business in Ipswich. He had been a salesman in a Brisbane shoe shop prior to the war. 

His first shoe store was opened in 1923 and was located in Nicholas Street, Ipswich. Mathers would grow to be a large chain that would absorb Vic Jensen's own chain of shore stores in 1963.

In July 1937 Mathers moved to a new store in Brisbane Street, Ipswich (next to Cameron's Butchers). It may have been O'Sullivan Building, 100 Brisbane Street where they stayed for many years. 

There are still Mathers stores in Brisbane suburbs although the store no longer exists in Ipswich.
