DescriptionInterior of Ipswich & West Moreton Building Society. Established in 1877, Ipswich and West Moreton Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society was the first building society in Ipswich and one of the first in Queensland. The building society’s originally shared an office with Enoch Bostock (chairman) in Brisbane Street, before purchasing an allotment from James Foote in 1887 on the corner of Limestone and East Streets. The two storey brick building with a large basement, which still stands on the corner, was built in 1888 and was designed by architect FDG Stanley. Part of the building was leased to the Queensland Woollen Manufacturing Co Ltd and Bishop & Woodward. The building was expanded in 1912, using a design by architect George Brockwell Gill. (Information from Ipswich Heritage Study). The Building Society merged with another Ipswich building society, First Provincial Building Society, in November 1996. The following December, the name was changed to First Australian Building Society, to encompass recent acquisitions outside of Ipswich: Northern Building Society and Sunstate Credit Union. In November 2000, the Building Society merged with Bendigo Bank. The man to the far left is believed to be William R. McMurdy, long serving secretary of the Building Society. Bishop and Woodward closed in March 1959, so it is possible that this image depicts a refurbishment of the building following the clothing manufacturer’s departure.
