Description

DescriptionLimestone Street side view of St Stephen’s Presbyterian church. The first Presbyterian service was conducted by the Rev, Dr Dunmore Lang, in December 1844. Later, a temporary church was erected in Ellenborough Street. In 1855, the NSW Government gave the church one acre of land on the corner of Limestone and Gordon Streets. Brisbane contractor John Petrie built a stone church with a square tower, but this church was later demolished as the foundations were proved to be faulty. This church building, located on the corner of Limestone and Gordon Streets, was built in 1866 and is formerly known as St Stephen’s. The building was designed by Joseph Backhouse, brother of Benjamin Backhouse who designed the Ipswich Grammar School. The foundation stone was laid in August 1865. In 2008, the church changed its name to Central Presbyterian Church.
