DescriptionGordon Street view of Ipswich Vulcanising and Rubber Works which was located at 40-42 Brisbane Street and the corner of Gordon Street, Ipswich. Vulcanisers and Rubber Works was a tyre and tube repairer, originally in Bell Street. The company moved to new premises in Brisbane Street on the corner of Gordon Street by April 1928 (site of Hog’s Breath Café, 2014), under the management of Norman Hales. Vulcanize is a process where rubber is treated with sulphur, or a sulphur compound, under heat and pressure to improve its elasticity and strength. The process can also produce a hard substance, such as vulcanite.
