Description
DescriptionWhen the heritage study was undertaken in 1991 the owners at the time advised that they had purchased the block of land thirty years ago (ca. 1961) and that there was another structure on the present site of the house; the present house being located on the property close to the creek. It was so low to the ground on its timber stumps that there were steps leading off the verandah.
The first mentioned house was relocated to School Road, Redbank Plains, and the present house moved up to this site about 1963. The method of relocation employed was to dismantle the verandahs, place the house on logs, and pull the house by a tractor whilst continually taking the back log and placing at the front as the house moved forward. There was a detached kitchen house of adzed logs which was not relocated with the main house, and this has subsequently been burnt down. Other farm outbuildings which have also been lost include a slab timber barn, a slab timber machinery shop, a dairy and a butchery. It is believed that there was a cotton ginning factory on the site in the 1860's.
Additional InformationThe property operated as a turf farm for a short while in the 1970's and at this time the words "Turf" were painted onto the roof, giving it its present name of the 'Turf Farm' house. The house's original plan included five rooms. The three at the front were a large central sitting room with smaller rooms adjoining on each side. At the rear of these rooms was a long narrow room, possibly a dining room, partitioned off at one corner to form another small room. This was extended about 4 years ago to add living and kitchen space. At this time the plan of the house was altered to include a hallway. The original builders of the house are not known, but it is thought they may have been amateurs as the house is not square.
The house was considered to be significant for its historical associations as an early farmhouse of the area and as an example of an uncommon relocation technque.
