Hi, I'm currently researching a WW2 soldier who spent time in 2/4 Australian General Hospital in Redbank. Do you have any records describing the location of this hospital?

Librarian response:
Hi Russell,

With regard to the location of the hospital at Redbank, the Ipswich Heritage Study (1991) includes information about the World War II Army Depot Precinct. If you click on the link below and go to this entry you will find more details about the precinct and it includes a map of the River Road area where the precinct was located - https://www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/9475/redbank_citations_2.pdf

Anyone have photos of the old tunnels with helmets in them. I remember back in the early 80's near the school there were heaps spilling out but the council demolished it all now.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for commenting on our By the Bremer page.

On our online resource - Picture Ipswich - we have quite a number of photos of the Redbank Army Camp. However, we do not have any of the old tunnels with helmets in them.

Hi, I have read your article re Captain James Finimore, thank you for sharing. I followed it with interest as I have a family member who was also enlisted in the 32 dental unit. With further research I found an article which includes a photo and extracts from the diary Capt Finimore kept while being kept Prisoner of War, website http://www.pows-of-japan.net/articles/95.html. I wanted to inquire if there is a copy of the photo of the 32 dental unit while training at Redbank? ie like shown in the mentioned website. Thank you

Hi Donna,

Thank you for commenting on the By the Bremer page and for including the link to the information and photograph regarding Captain James Finimore.

While we have more photographs of Captain Finimore and the Redbank Army Camp on Picture Ipswich, we do not currently have any photos of the 32 Dental Unit.
If you wanted to look at the images we do have, Picture Ipswich can be accessed via our home page

I am researching the military service of my wife's uncle who was killed in action during WWII. He trained at the Redbank Army Camp and I am wondering if the photo sources and information mentioned above are available for study? Any help appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for commenting on this post.

Photos of the Redbank Army Camp can be viewed on Picture Ipswich which is available via the Ipswich Libraries website - http://www.library.ipswich.qld.gov.au/ Just click on the tile called "Picture Ipswich" and search for Redbank Army Camp.

The Ipswich Heritage Study which includes citations for the camp is available online here - http://www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/9475/redbank_citations_2.pdf

You will also be able to find newspaper articles that reference the camp during that era via Trove's digitised newspapers - http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/?q=

If you haven't done so already, you can visit the National Archives of Australia's site to access the service record of your wife's uncle. Many of the WWII records have now been digitised along with the WWI records. You can search for the record on this page - https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScreens/NameSearch.aspx

We hope this helps.

Hi David, Thank you for commenting on Ipswich Libraries By the Bremer Local History Blog.
In the early 1990s, the Ipswich City Council completed a heritage study and one of the places of cultural significance covered in this report was the World War II Army Depot Precinct at River Road, Redbank. This entry can be viewed at page 20 on the following link -
http://www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/9475/redbank_citations_2.pdf
This entry provides a history of the army depot precinct, as well as an accompanying map. While nothing remains of the extensive staging camp, at the time of the report the stores depot immediately to the south of this encampment were still relatively intact. Details of this location are in the link above.

Hi,
Thank you of the article.
I am a little confused. There is a River Road at Redbank, by the Brisbane River, but I've also read that the camp was by the Bremer.
is the location in River Road at Redbank or somewhere else?
Thank you,
Terry

Hi Terry,
Thank you for your comment regarding the Redbank Army Camp. According to our sources this camp only ever operated on the River Road property
which is located next to the Brisbane River at Redbank, adjacent (approximately) to the Redbank Railway Station. We are not aware of any other
camps that operated in the area. However, the source which you site may have confused the river near Redbank as the Bremer rather than, what it is,
which is the Brisbane River.
Thanks again.
