Description
DescriptionIsaac Ham was Mayor of Ipswich in 1905 and an alderman from 1903 to 1906 and from 1914 to 1920. Born in Essex, Isaac Ham moved to Northumberland where he took up coal mining as a young man. He and his first wife, Sarah Hodgson, travelled to Australia in 1886 and took up residence in Ipswich. He went to work in the old Mihi Colliery at North Ipswich where he met with a serious accident and broke his leg. Upon recovering he opened a business as a baker, confectioner, and restaurant proprietor in Nicholas Street. He was a Freemason, was associated with the Chamber of Commerce, and a Methodist Church member. He was a breeder of cocker spaniels and fox terriers and was a judge for many show associations. His first wife passed away in 1909 and he remarried several years later. Mr Ham moved to Brisbane in 1920 and set up a business as a baker and pastrycook in George Street. He was elected to the Toowong Council as an Alderman. His second wife passed away and he moved to live with his only son, Mr Isaac Ham jnr. at Mt Walker where he had established a jersey stud on a farming property. In his last few years Mr Isaac Ham was sick, requiring several surgical operations. He passed away in 1941 and was buried at the Ipswich General Cemetery.
