DescriptionLlewellyn Roy Edwards was born in Ipswich on 2 August, 1935. He was schooled at Raceview and Silkstone State Schools, Ipswich Grammar School and the Ipswich Technical College. He apprenticed as an electrician later joining the family Electrical business, R. T. Edwards. From 1958 to 1965 he studied a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Queensland. In 1968 he was Surgical Registrar at the Ipswich General Hospital. From 1969 – 1972 he was a Medical practitioner at Raceview. Running for the Liberal party in 1972 he won the seat of Ipswich and became Leader of the Liberal Party from 1978 – 1983. He also held the positions of Minister for Health (1974 – 1978), Deputy Premier (1978 – 1983) and Treasurer (1978 – 1983), retiring from Parliament in 1983. In 1984 he was awarded a knighthood and was also appointed as Chairman and Chief Executive of World Expo 88. In 1988 he was named Queenslander of the Year and in 1989 he was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia.
