DescriptionFramed illuminated ‘Welcome to the City’ address presented to the Honourable T. J. Byrnes, Premier of Queensland, during his visit to Ipswich, 1898. The address reads: 'The Honourable T. J. Byrnes, Premier of Queensland. Sir, We the members of the Municipal Council of the town of Ipswich, on behalf of the citizens thereof, desire to give you a hearty welcome on this your first official visit since assuming the high and honourable position of Premier of Queensland. We also desire to congratulate you on attaining so exalted a position, which is all the more pleasing by reason of your being the first native of the Colony holding this responsible office; and we have every confidence that the best interests of fair Queensland your native land, will on this account always be most jealously guarded by you, and trust that you may have the proud satisfaction of seeing the Colony making sound progress under your administration. Wishing you every success, and again extending you a hearty welcome to the town. We have the honor to be Sir, Your obedient servants. Signed on behalf of the Council. Roderick McLeod Mayor.
