The Ritz Movie Theatre was situated in Bell St. Ipswich in between the Ritz Cafe and Cribb and Foote's (later Reid's) Department Store. The first air-conditioned theatre in Ipswich, it housed an enormous air-conditioning plant run by Earle Pommer - Refrigeration Engineer. Movie Theatres in the fifties had a large staff of Usherettes who wore very smart uniforms and whose job status was almost on a par with Airline Stewardesses. The Ritz had a large candy store in the foyer and boasted a "crying room" for mothers with babies.
