Front row: Ernest (Earnest) Mason, Thomas Mason and Walter John Close and his wife, Caroline. John Close and Caroline came from England with their two children, John William and Florence, a third child, Mary, died at sea in 1884 on the ship 'Waroonga'. They settled in Ipswich in Down Street, and in 1893, he commenced work at the Ipswich Railway Workshops as a labourer on 6/- (six shillings) a day. They would later move to Smith Street, North Ipswich, and then purchase a home in Limestone Street. They had eight children in Australia, including two daughters who would die in their first year. John Close would retire from the Railways in December 1925. Their eldest son, John William Bleakley, would become Chief Protector of Aborigines in Queensland. Caroline Mason (nee Tobey) was a midwife in Ipswich.
