Mary Corcoran
March Corcoran was an Irish convict from Country Roscommon. She married Stephen Broom, a convict transported to New South Wales on the Claudine in 1829, with his brother, James Brown.
In December 1843, Mary was granted a Certificate of Freedom which had 'Brisbane' notated in the Margin. Mary and Stephen lived in South Brisbane initially but they had moved to Ipswich by 1848. Mary was admitted to the Brisbane Gaol six times for drunkenness between 1852 and 1855. On 24 February 1849, Stephen Broom cautioned the public not to give credit to his wife, Mary, advising that he would not be answerable for debts that she may contract.
In November 1852, James Broom was fined £3 for maltreating Mary Broom, his sister-in-law'.
Five of Mary and Stephen's ten children died young, between the years 1847 and 1860. Mary died on 22 September 1860 from complications after child birth, their daughter Ann died on 19 September 1860, at just 2 days old from premature birth.
