James Christie
The Queensland Times report on an accident incurred by James Christie in December 1863:
On Tuesday morning a serious accident occurred in Bremer-street, near the Sawyers' Arms Hotel, when a man named James Christie had his leg broken. At an early hour in the morning in descending the steps of the verandah of the hotel, which at that particular spot is some feet from the ground, he had missed his footing and fell heavily on the ground. Shortly after the accident he was discovered by Constable Bodel, and assistance being procured, was taken to the Hospital. Christie is a man well known in town. He was formerly in Mr. Fleming's employ; and at the time of the accident, we are given to understand, he was connected with the Town Marie Boiling Down Establishment. Though he had been drinking on the previous day, on Tuesday morning he was perfectly sober. Christie, it appears, had the same leg broken before; whether or not it will be again restored to use is at present unknown.
James was working at the Bremer Mills in 1854. In 1855 he is listed as having paid a contribution of five shillings, in aid of the Patriotic Fund in 1855. The contributions were collected from 71 people at the establishment of Joseph Fleming Esq, in the Police District of Ipswich.
