Rosewood CWA

Originally, on this site was the Royal Bank of Qld that opened in 1887. It closed around 1896 and reopened in 1901. On January 4th, 1914, a disastrous fire destroyed some seven buildings including the Rosewood Hotel, Royal Bank, and half a dozen shops in the main street of Rosewood. All that was remaining of The Royal Bank was the heavy-duty brick and steel-lined strongroom that survived the intense heat. The vault can still be viewed inside the building today. Inside the vault on the back of the door can be seen the names of past bank employees.

The Bank was rebuilt in 1917. The Royal Bank and Bank of Nth Qld amalgamated to form the Bank of Qld Ltd. In 1922, the Bank of Qld amalgamated with the National Bank to form the Qld National Bank. This was taken over by the National Bank of Australia in 1948.

The National Bank (NBA) moved to the current Doctors surgery in 1974, then brought in a new building from Dirranbandi. In 1982, it was renamed the National Australia Bank and moved to opposite side of John Street.

The Rosewood CWA formed after the Rosewood Show of 1924, following a request by Gov. Sir Matthew Nathan. The Governor officially opened a rest room on 28 March 1925. The Rosewood branch became too big and opened a Grandchester and Marburg branch which, in 1927, had over 100 members. Following closure of the rest room in 1952, meetings were held in private homes or local halls. In 1969, a fund was started to obtain a new rest room. This site chosen the former National Bank purchased for $500 and opened as a CWA headquarters in 1975.
