St Andrew's Catholic Church, Walloon

In July of 1904 a meeting of the Catholic members of the Walloon community, met at J. Dale's home to discuss the building of a Sunday School. Present at the first meeting were:

A committee was formed with J. Cronin in the position of chairman and secretary, and P. J. Danaher was the treasurer. A deputation met with Rev. A. Horan who supported the wishes of the committee.

Subscriptions were sought from the community and district, with in excess of 70 pounds being raised. This exceeded expectations, so the committee decided to erect a building large enough to serve as both a Church and a Sunday school.

The contract for the church and Sunday school was for a building that measured 25ft by 30ft. Before construction began it was decided to add an additional 5ft to the original design, making the total length 30ft.  The contractor was C. Redsdale. The new Catholic Church at Walloon “The Blessed Virgin of the Immaculate Conception", opened on 23 October 1904. The Queensland Times article on the "Opening Ceremony" in October 1904, described the building as a "neatly-built, compact wooden structure", which was able to hold 150 people. 

A low-set timber country church c.1900 with a simple gabled roof, separate gabled roof over east and west transepts and a small gabled porch entry. The building is clad in weatherboard and corrugated galvanised iron and is supported on low timber stumps. Vertical timber slatted gable infill valances are relatively unusual. Door and window openings are of simple lancet form and the windows are paired timber casements. There is a free-standing hardwood bell post and small crosses adorning most of the peaks of gables.
