DescriptionGeometric sculpture of enlarged pollen, mirrored finish, internal lighting.Artist StatementStanding speaks of pride, strength, and patience. In evolutionary terms it is what makes us unique and human. Standing is the point of departure, from where we take our first steps.
The form, influenced by the floral emblem of the city of Ipswich Eucalyptus Curtisii, symbolises optimism, community in harmony and joy. The mirrored surfaces of the form’s interior create the illusion of diamonds, a subtle reference to the role of coal in Ipswich’s development. The concrete plinth references the material wealth, industry, and associated labour on which Ipswich City (formerly Limestone) was founded.
This work is intended to be a celebration of both Ipswich’s rich heritage and an optimistic offering to its ongoing evolution.
Beyond that, this work with the title ‘Standing’ also seeks to bring attention to the land on which I and this work stand. Tulmur, home and traditional lands of the Yuggera, Jaggera and Ugarapul peoples. I sincerely hope that this work speaks to everyone who calls this place home.
I acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which I work and live, I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded. Australia always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.
I wish to recognise the past atrocities committed against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and that Australia was founded on the genocide and dispossession of First Nations people. I acknowledge that bias colonial structures and policies remain in place today, and recognise the ongoing struggles of First Nation's People in dismantling those structures. The struggle to seek justice and to acknowledge and address this nation’s violent past is ongoing and is a necessary requirement for individual and collective healing.
