T. J. Geertz, Tailor

Theodore Geertz had been in business with Thomas Parker in the early years of the 20th century however that partnership became defunct on 1 January 1911 and the experienced tailor went into business for himself. At first it was in Brisbane Street, next to James Richey & Co. Drapers, who at this time were opposite St Paul's. Before long, the firm would move to Bell Street  and subsequently to other locations in Brisbane Street. In 1927, the business was located in the building at Hunter's corner, where Brisbane & Nicholas Streets met.

By 1916 the firm was advertising as T. J. Geertz & Sons. It would appear that son A. A. Geertz had  joined the business and when Theodore retired in the early 1930s, Arthur became the principal. When T. J. died in 1938, the store was being run by Arthur at 90 Brisbane Street. This site was next to Petite Frock Salon and Whitehead's photographic studio. They would remain here until about 1943 when a lack of qualified staff due to World War II forced their closure. However Duncalfe's Menswear store (opposite St Paul's church) had lost their tailor for the same reason so Geertz went to work in their tailoring department. He was employed there until at least 1949.

Tailoring was a family occupation as Theodore's father was a tailor, just like Theodore and Arthur after him.
