Not long after arriving in Queensland, Thomas Pryde commenced working for Joseph Fleming at the Bremer Mills at Bundamba.
He became a contractor with Mr. Welsby and together they constructed many early buildings between Ipswich and Toowoomba. They secured the contract to building railway stations between Ipswich and Dalby.
Thomas went on to become an alderman of Ipswich Municipal Council and Mayor in 1873 and 1874. After moving to Esk he became a member of the Esk Divisional Board and was Chairman for three years.
