Redbank Plaza Library, Ipswich Libraries (1985- )

Redbank Plaza Library the officially opened on Tuesday September 3rd 1985 and was the first branch library run by the City of Ipswich. 

Prior to its opening, the Ipswich Municipal Library on Bell Street and the mobile library serviced the district. The opening of this second permanent library was expected to service 10,000-15,000 residents in the growing suburbs around Redbank. 

Redbank Plaza library opened with approximately 10,000 books and a small collection of magazines, borrowable art prints and audio books on cassette. Membership also allowed users to access items from the central library's collection of over 100,000 items.

The library was not equipped with computers or digital catalogues at the time of opening, however these would come to be used in Ipswich's library service in the following years.

It was originally open for 25.5 hours a week, a significant increase from the weekly 5 hours of library service provided by the mobile library at Goodna that residents in surrounding suburbs.

At the time of opening, membership was free to residents and ratepayers and charged annual fees to non-resident members.

Redbank Plaza is still operational today in the same location as it was on opening day 1985.

Redbank Plaza Library reopened its doors on Monday 23 March 2026, following major renovations.  The bold new space is designed for connection, exploration and community.  Visitors can now step inside and experience fresh modern interiors, upgraded technology, welcoming reading zones and vibrant areas perfect for learning, discovering and relaxing.  The library now has a new entrance from inside the shopping centre, making it easier for visitors to pop in while they are at Redbank Plaza.
