Description

DescriptionThe family of Walter Bryan, manager of the Ipswich branch of T.C. Beirne, held regular children's parties at their York Street, East Ipswich, home Roseneath.

In 1901, 50 children attended a Christmas party, where Mr. Bryan's 'idea was to give the children a demonstration of the manner in which such parties are carried out in the old country'. Tea was served on the lawn, in 'picnic fashion', a bonfire was lit in the yard, and a 'mammoth and very handsome Christmas tree was then brought upon the scene to the immense delight of the youthful guests.' Children were given four tickets, which could be exchanged for four gifts from the tree.

The Boxing Day party of 1904 was postponed, following the death of the Bryan's infant son on the 21st December of that year. The party was instead held in May 1905, coinciding with their daughter May's birthday. 'One of the most beautiful shrubs in the garden was converted into a veritable bower of tows, some 200 tows, besides various bright ornaments, were used and in decoration, and, as they caught the sun's rays, they presented a beautiful appearance indeed. One very small boy, when informed that this was a toy-tree on which toys grew, 'cutely asked if there were any seeds to be had.' 60 children attended and afternoon entertainment included 'lolly-showers' and the City Band, conducted by Mr. S.O. Booth. 'About half-past 4 the stripping of the tree began, the toys being transferred to the large side-board in the dinning-room, which was also gaily dressed. The various articles were numbered and drawn for, so that every little guest had a share in the distribution. The queen doll, which was very beautifully dressed, fell to little Beryl Summerville. After the drawing those who had secured musical (?) instruments gave an impromptu toy symphony.'
