The North Australian, Ipswich, & General Advertiser

The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser was the first newspaper to be published in Ipswich. 

The first edition was published on 1st January 1856 and the first editor was Arthur Sidney Lyon.

The first newspaper in Ipswich was the North Australian, founded in 1856.  The publishing office was relocated to Brisbane in 1863.  The paper's editor, Arthur Sidney Lyon (1817-1861), would go on to be a founder of the Moreton Bay Courier (Brisbane Courier, now The Courier-Mail), as well as the Darling Downs Gazette.  Lyon worked for the North Australian for about two years, before a disagreement with the proprietors ended his time there.

On the staff were two employees who would be influential in the Hugh Parkinson, the foremen printer, and Arthur Sidney Lyon, editor.
