Blackstone Physical Culture Club
The Physical Club, associated with the Blackstone Welsh Church was made up of a boys' club and a girls' companion club. The girls club began in 1923 and the boys' club began in 1928.
The opening meeting of the Blackstone Girls' Physical Culture Club took place in April 1923. The instructor was Miss Valma Cribb and their were 46 members.
In 1931, Mr. S. Brown instructed the boys in gymnastic including the horizontal and parallel bars, horse and floor work. The girls under the instruction of Lorna Owens "trained in exercises that lend themselves to the cultivation of graceful carriage and deportment".
The two groups did an annual demonstration in 1931, which was described in the Queensland Times:
Last night the combined clubs gave an instructive and entertaining display featuring their work of the past season. The lads showed themselves adept and agile in a variety of athletic movements and turns, and several pyramidical groupings were done with precision and excellence. The audience was particularly attracted by the work of the smaller boys, the youngest of whom is only eight years. Messrs. S. Brown and Fred. Welsh (Assistant Instructor) also gave a picturesque display of fireclub swinging.
The girls, who number 27, carried out their work in a commendable manner, demonstrating the physical advantages they are deriving from it.
