Description

DescriptionWalter Grieve arrived from Scotland in 1839. He worked in the Brisbane Valley and married Ann Gordon at Rosewood Station in 1851. He was employed by the Bigge's at Mt Esk. About 1856 the family moved to Ipswich and built in Mortimer Street where he had two cottages. He established a butcher shop in Brisbane Street, and continued his pastoral and agricultural interest, including growing cotton at Lakeland on the Bremer River. He owned a set of eight tenement cottages in Thorn Street which he rented out. He was on the committee for the Mechanics School of Arts. A foundation member of the Presbyterian Church, he was a trustee when the New South Wales Government granted the land for a church. In the late 1860s times were difficult, he now had nine children and sold everything in 1868 and left Ipswich. He worked for Major North at Wivenhoe Sation. In 1876 he and his eldest sons began selecting land in the Brisbane Valley, parts of the Colinton and Mt Esk resumptions. While the sons developed the blocks he continued working on the Darling Downs. He and his wife then went to live with their son, John, at Glenhowden where he died in 1896.
