Description

DescriptionEssex was a screw steamer built by Suttons at Kangaroo Point in 1880. It was not registered at that time and the reason for this is not clear. She was registered by William Collin & Co in 1903 and used regularly on a cargo run between Brisbane and Ipswich.

In 1918, she sank at Seventeen Mile Rocks while towing a punt, but was recovered.

She became a familiar sight on the river at Ipswich but the cargo service had increasing problems with navigation. When nothing was done to dredge the river, in spite of many complaints by Collin & Co, the service ceased about 1928.

In 1932, the engines were removed and Essex was converted to a barge. Collin & Co sold her to Christian Berthelsen (timber contractor) and William Berthelsen (puntsman) in Maryborough in 1942. She carried timber from Fraser Island to mills at Maryborough for several years and her hulk was eventually abandoned at Urang Creek on Fraser Island.

The rusted remains were located and photographed recently by Peter Ringland. The bow is missing and mangroves are growing thought the hull.
