William was buried in the Ipswich General Cemetery on 29 April 1872. James Ivory's entry in his diary on Monday 29th April 1872 read:

Kanakas off to a funeral of a dead drunken Kanaka.

The following day he wrote:

Kanakas returned without being at funeral, as there had to be a post mortem examination.
