Ah Man

William Kellow appeared at the Police Court on 16 December 1887 on the charge of assaulting Ah Man on the 13th. He pleaded guilty in self-defence.

Defendant pleaded guilty to assaulting in self-defence, which was taken as a plea of not guilty. Complainant and Mr. D. T. Keogh gave evidence for the prosecution, the former stating that defendant took two or three apples from his baskets when opposite a shop in Brisbane-street; on being asked to pay for them he refused to do so, and the Chinaman tried to take the fruit from him, whereupon the defendant struck "John" over the left eye with his fist; the Celestial ran into Keogh's store on the opposite side of the street, and defendant followed him, having in his hand a long stick with which the Chinaman was carrying his baskets. He struck complainant on the back of the head with it, knocking him down, and when Ah Man attempted to rise defendant aimed another blow at him, missing him and striking Keogh's door. Keogh then seized defendant, intending to give him into custody, but on another young man coming to defendant's assistance, Keogh released him. Complainant's wounds were dressed by a chemist, and they were still very painful.. At defendant's request the case was adjourned till Monday next; bail allowed, defendant in £10 and two sureites of £5.
