DescriptionBorn in Nambour in 1947, Leslie James (Les) Scott won the seat of Oxley in the 1988 by-election, following Bill Hayden's elevation to Governor-General.
Scott successfully retained the seat of Oxley at the 1990 and 1993 Federal Elections, that saw Bob Hawke and Paul Keating retain a nine seat majority (1990) and 15 seat majority (1993) against the Coalition.
At the 1996 Federal Election, despite Oxley being one of the safest Labor seats in the country, a 23% swing against Scott saw the controversial and disendorsed Liberal candidate, Pauline Hanson, take Oxley. This election also saw the defeat of Prime Minister Paul Keating and the appointment of John Howard as Prime Minister, with the ALP reduced to 49 seats, compared to the Liberal National coalition's 94 seats.
Prior to his parliamentary career, Scott was employed in the banking industry for 25 years. In 1999, Scott, in partnership with his wife Anne, established Les Scott and Associates, a finance consulting service specialising in home loans.Additional Information Member for Oxley from 8th October 1998 to 2nd March 1996.
