E. Bostock & Sons

Enoch Bostock became a licensed surveyor in 1865. Immediately, he went into business in Ipswich providing land surveying services. His first office was in London Chambers in Brisbane Street. In the late 1870s Enoch had business premises at the corner of East and Brisbane Streets where the Queensland National Bank would be located from 1881 to 1948. In the 1890s Bostocks was located in O'Sullivan's Buildings, opposite the Australian Joint Stock Bank in Brisbane Street. Later still, the firm traded in Nicholas Street before constructing their own chambers in 1915 at the corner of Brisbane and Ellenborough Streets. This brick building still stands today, forming part of the architectural heritage of Ipswich. It was designed by  George Brockwell Gill and is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

Enoch's sons Frederick and Henry (Harry) joined their father in business around 1890. In December 1891 the firm commenced weekly Saturday sales of horses and cattle at their newly erected saleyards at the corner of East & Limestone Streets. Harry was in charge of the new operation whilst Enoch conducted the sales. At this time the other three street corners where the two roads intersected were occupied by: Shillito & Sons Foundry, George H. Wilson's store, and Ipswich & West Moreton Building Society. 

In 1903 Frederick became a licensed surveyor. Also, in this year Frederick, Harry and Enoch became partners in the firm of E. Bostock & Sons, and moved their offices to the ground floor of Deacon's Chambers in Nicholas Street. F. J. Ireland, pastrycook and confectioner, was located next door whilst a solicitor (J. A. Born) and dentist (K. L. Barnett) provided their services from the floor above. 

Over their lifetime,  Bostocks subdivided much of Ipswich and conducted many significant auctions including: 

• in 1903 Spring Gardens Estate in Newtown; East Ipswich Estate (formerly Thorn's Paddock)
• in 1904 Liverpool Estate; Tarrawingee Estate; Brassall Park Estate; Powerhouse Estate in Railway Workshops Hills
• in 1905 Waterstown Estate
• in 1915 Booval Estate
• and in 1930 Abermain Estate.

Bostock senior was a well known Ipswich business identity, land agent, valuer and auctioneer. Additionally, Enoch Bostock was an alderman, a founding director of Ipswich & West Moreton Building Society, and a Returning Officer for Fassifern electorate. When he died in 1905, his sons carried on the family business until their deaths: Frederick died in 1939 and Harry in 1940.  Jesse Gore Merrett, their brother-in-law, then carried on the business until August 1945 when he too passed away and Bostock & Sons closed down after 80 years.  J. G. Merrett was a longtime employee and then partner of the company. When the business finally closed, their books, records and insurance agency were taken over by W. B. Parkinson, another Ipswich auctioneer.  Deeds & other documents usually stored in Bostocks strongroom were moved to P. L. Cardew, Simpson & Merrell, Solicitors of Brisbane Street.

 Harry had performed the role of City Valuator at one time.

A legal firm known as Heiner & Hooper moved into Bostock's premises in November 1945.
