Description

Samuel Wensley Blackall was born on 1 May 1809 and died on 2 January 1871. He was an Irish soldier and politician and he was the second Governor of Queensland, from 1868 until 1871. The Blackall Memorial Fountain was built in his honour at the intersection of Brisbane and Nicholas Street.

The foundation stone was laid on Tuesday, 30 November 1880. the Colonial Architect, Mr. F.D. G. Stanley designed the memorial and it was constructed by Mr. C. A. Miller. The stone was from Murphy's Creek quarry.

The memorial was unveiled by his Excellency, Sir Arthur Kennedy on Thursday, 16 December 1880 and the water was turned on and the fountain was declared open.
