Description

Tourism in this period was very different to tourism today.

Early squatters visited the area on their way to the Darling Downs and the West Moreton area. Patrick Leslie stayed at Limestone (now Ipswich) overnight in 1841 on his way from Brisbane to the Darling Downs.

The following year, Governor Gipps officially inspected Brisbane and Limestone. It was the Governor who changed the name 'Limestone' to Ipswich.

Could we consider the early surveyors to be tourists in a sense? In 1842 and 1843, surveyor Henry Wade, noted natural and man-made features and prepared the layout for the town of Ipswich. He had a job to do, but it is highly likely that he was personally interested in the surroundings he found himself in.

Land speculators and people arriving via Brisbane to settle in the 1840s, purchased lots in the newly created town.
