Description
DescriptionIn 1978, there was a program to remove the power poles on Limestone street.
The power poles which stood on Limestone Street between Gordon Street and Nicholas Street blocked parts of the road and were measured to stand off the kerb by up to 1.5 metres.
In October 1978, the District Engineer of SEQEB (South East Queensland Electric Board) D Eckhardt approved the removal of the poles on Limestone Street between Gordon and East Streets. The work was initially intended to be complete by February 1979 and was to happen in concert with the installation of a new power substation for the Limestone Street Coles Supermarket store. The cost of the Gordon Street-Nicholas Street removal of power poles and the Power substation was reported as $73 680, which converts to approximately $451 741 in 2023.
The power poles on Limestone Street from East Street west to Nicholas Street were planned to be removed during the construction of new State Government buildings on Limestone Street.
Instead of having poles, D Eckhardt explained to the Queensland Times, "[t]he power lines will be taken underground and the overhead street lighting will be from modern steel poles." He continued, "[w]e have been aware of the traffic hazard and ugliness of the power poles for a long time, but needed the justification for the expense of putting the power underground. The new Coles complex and the new State Government building with their power requirements have provided that justification."References (offline)Power poles to go un sweeping SEQEB move - 10 October 1978 - The Queensland Times
