- Laurie HancockDescriptionIn June 1981, the first completed residential building of Nowlanvil Aged Care Facility was opened by the Treasurer of Queensland, Dr Llew Edwards, with 350 people in attendance, including Bill and Myra Nowlan and superintendent of the Ipswich Central Mission Rev. Eric Moore. It was built by the Blue Nursing Service, now known as Blue Care, on 1.65 hectares or just over 4 acres of land donated by the Nowlans. Nowlanvil was named after them.
Bill and Myra wished to donate the land to the Uniting Church for the purpose of a residential facility in the early 1970s, but the church did not have the funds to make use of the land until the late 1970s. The generous donation to the church was meant as a memorial to their son, Clarence Henry (Clary) Nowlan, who passed away in 1971 in an accident while working on his farm.
The first completed building of the Nowlanvil facility was Kelston House, which held 57 beds and was named after the first home built on the land. Joseph Wilton (1840- ) and his wife Margaret Wilton (nee McDairmaid) (1837- ) built the first Kelston House on what was Ripley Road, Raceview, after he bought the land from Michael Macanalon in 1880. Joseph named his home after his place of birth, Kelston, Somerset, in England, and the land stayed in the Wilton family for 50 years, operating as a dairy farm and milk run.
The first stage of Nowlanvil Aged Care Home completed in 1981 cost $1,400,000 million to construct in 1980, an amount which equates to $6,763,567 in 2022. Blue Care bought another parcel of land from the Nowlans and intended to complete Nowlanvil by building on that land in accompaniment to Kelston House.
Rev. Moore spoke at the opening, explaining that the entirety of Nowlanvil, including the yet-to-be-completed stages, would provide total care for the elderly residents. Rev. Moore also said that residents would not feel isolated, but would experience a friendly atmosphere as though they were with extended family.References (offline)'Their 'home' is under way' - The Queensland Times - 14th August 1980
