Description
QT Image CaptionOperation clean-up at the Ipswich Cemetery attracted people of all ages. Eight-year-old Kyle Vince of Ipswich is pictured lending a hand during the massive job.
-John WassDescriptionThe Clean-Up Campaign for the Ipswich general cemetery was organised after the cemetery grounds fell into dilapidation due to lack of funds for maintenance from the Cemetery Trustees.
On the 18th of June 1977, about 1000 volunteers gave their time to aid in the repair of the cemetery. Some began the day before 7 o'clock in the morning. By the afternoon, the cemetery was described as being 'a sea of bent backs', referring to the volunteers hard at work.
The coordinator of the effort was Father John "Dobbo" Dobson.
The use and operation of the heavy machinery was donated by the Ipswich City Council.
The Hotels Association Charity Fund supplied $200 worth of drinks. The managers of the North Star Hotel and the Kerwick Hotel organised the lunch given out to the workers. Other pubs donated money for the Clean-Up campaign.
